Health Literacy
Helping every resident find, understand, and use health information.
What is Health Literacy?
Health literacy is the ability to find, understand, and use information to make informed health decisions. It affects how people access care, follow instructions, and manage their wellbeing.
Why It Matters in St. Lucie County
Health literacy is a priority in St. Lucie County because too many residents struggle to find, understand, and use the health information they need to stay well. Local partners consistently report that people are overwhelmed by medical instructions, insurance paperwork, appointment systems, and online health information.
Many residents face additional barriers including limited access to care, transportation challenges, language differences, and low digital confidence. These challenges increase the risk of delayed care and preventable emergency visits.
Improving health literacy strengthens the entire community. When information is clear, residents can make informed decisions and feel confident managing their health.
